Volunteering Today Has Changed. Here's How.

The days religious virtues acted as the main motivators for doing good are behind us. Today, motivations for volunteering range from an exercise in selflessness to an attempt at boosting our CV. One thing is certain, volunteering today is no longer the same as it was just decades ago. The modern volunteer has evolved, just as the modern employee and business owner have.

Information overload

Read: 📱are everywhere

If you’re reading this, chances are that at least one electronic device with access to the internet has comfortably nestled itself into your daily routine. You may use it for work, leisure, or both, yet it is pretty safe to say that an important part of the information you process every day originates from one of these devices.

We read our news, books, blog posts, and more on our smartphones and computers, which rarely if ever, leave our side. This means that it has become nearly impossible to remain oblivious to the threats faced by our planet today. Although most of us wouldn’t have it any other way, the constant influx of facts and news can cause great frustration, stress, and anxiety around the question of what to care about and what not.

‘Busy' has become an excuse

Read: work = life

Leading on from my previous point, I suspect the above statement doesn't come as too much of a shock. In individualistic cultures, omnipresent in the West, hard work and personal advancement have become the subject of great veneration - more so than ever. In other words, 'the busier, the better’.

It is understandable, therefore, that volunteering and engagement with our community have taken somewhat of a backseat. Yet, let’s not forget about the important benefits of community:

✅ Offers a sense of belonging

✅ Improves our health

✅ Makes us happier

We urge you to do good regularly and determine what you truly care about. Make this exercise a part of your routine and remember, there is no better time than now!
