Über The Story Museum

The Story Museum celebrates stories in all forms and explores their enduring power to teach and delight. Founded in 2003, The Story Museum began by taking stories and storytellers into schools and communities. Since 2009, we have gradually been transforming a large, dilapidated building in the centre of Oxford into an unusual museum, with the help of authors, artists, teachers and other cultural organisations and volunteers of all ages.

In Spring 2014, we celebrated the first phase of our development with refurbished facilities, the opening of a shop and café, new events and a major exhibition: 26 Characters. Our aim is to create an international centre which will inspire present and future generations. We still have far to go in order to complete our vision and transform the rest of our building – but we’re on our way! Once complete, the Story Museum will be open six days a week all year round, offering a varied programme of exhibitions and events. We then expect to attract 100,000 visitors a year.

People love stories and they're a great way to learn. We hope you'll visit our most unusual museum, shop and café , and enjoy what's on.

We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help us deliver experiences that will delight our visitors, young and old, and develop our ideas and audiences for the future. You’ll meet fascinating people, be part of some unique events and play an important role in helping The Story Museum come true – as well as gain some different skills and experience.

This includes 'Exhibition Stewarding', 'Weekday School Visits', 'Evening Event Volunteers', 'Backstage Volunteers' and 'Kitchen Assistants'.

The Story Museum engages many volunteers from our own Board of Trustees to the visitor services assistants in our galleries. We also gain a huge amount from the expertise that our volunteer advisors contribute in all areas of our organisation, from financial strategy to exhibition making. As we gear up for our next big challenge – the Chapter 2 fundraising campaign – we would particularly welcome skills in capital campaigns, PR, community fundraising and major donors. Contact us to get involved. However you decide to help, you will become part of our treasured donor and volunteer community. We look forward to keeping you in touch with news updates, hosting you at special events and involving you in the work of the Museum as much or as little as you choose.
